Latest GE Energy Smart®-CFLs Provide Incandescent-Like Features

CLEVELAND, Ohio — (NYSE: GE)  Many consumers recognize that today's long-life ENERGY STAR®-qualified GE Energy Smart® compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, products of ecomaginationsm, provide big energy savings compared with incandescent bulbs. Some consumers know that the light quality provided by CFLs available today eclipses what the bulbs delivered five short years ago. Few consumers, however, realize just how incandescent-like CFLs have become.

''A lot of people, including some of the biggest fans of GE's famous Spiral® CFLs, don't know that we have CFLs with dimming capability or daylight color temperatures,'' says Kathy Sterio, general manager of consumer marketing, GE Appliances & Lighting.

Dimming controls help set the mood but they are also increasing in popularity as energy-conserving devices. Standard dimmers operate by changing the voltage waveform going into the dimmable CFL, which responds by reducing or increasing its light output.

GE Energy Smart Dimmable Spiral 15- and 26-watt CFLs operate on standard household dimmer switches. Capable of dimming to 20 percent of maximum light output, these soft white 10,000-hour rated life CFLs last up to 10 times longer, respectively, than equivalent 60- and 100-watt incandescent bulbs.

''Our dimmable bulbs provide the features that consumers have enjoyed for years in incandescent bulbs, but with the outstanding energy efficiency and long life of GE-quality CFLs,'' notes Sterio. ''People also appreciate not having to change bulbs as frequently.''

GE Energy Smart Daylight CFLs provide a cool daylight color that enhances any decor. These 8,000-hour rated life 10-, 15-, 20- and 26-watt CFLs-guaranteed for 5 years based on 4 hours of daily use-provide the same light output, respectively, as 40-, 60-, 75- and 100-watt incandescent bulbs.

''We love that the Spiral shape first created by GE has become synonymous with energy efficient lighting. But that achievement doesn't tell the full story about today's GE Energy Smart CFLs,'' says Sterio. ''We want consumers to know that we make daylight and dimmable Spiral CFLs, 3-way CFLs, and covered CFLs with the GE Spiral bulb inside. They all turn on instantly and deliver the great light output consumers have come to expect from GE.''

As part of its support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR campaign, GE wants to motivate family discussions about the good that comes from conserving energy and retrofitting with CFLs. It encourages consumers to submit pledges at www.gelighting.com/changetheworld, and to use ENERGY STAR-qualified GE Energy Smart CFLs in the five most used sockets at home. GE Energy Smart CFLs are available at most home improvement, office supply, discount, grocery, and super center stores.
