World's First Truly Incandescent–Shaped GE Energy Smart® CFL Bulb Now Energy Star® Qualified, Available in Three Wattages

CLEVELAND, Ohio — (NYSE: GE)  Miniaturized electronics developed by GE Appliances & Lighting engineers and scientists are the enabling technology of a new covered GE Energy Smart® compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb featuring the GE Spiral® CFL inside the glass bulb. With this new CFL — an exclusive design achievement that GE has protected with more than a dozen U.S. patent applications — the electronics fit in the neck of the bulb. The result is a profile that‘s practically identical to a standard incandescent light bulb. Now this new covered CFL bulb is Energy Star® qualified.

GE anticipates its new incandescent–shaped covered Energy Smart CFL appeals to people that want the energy savings and long–life performance of a GE Energy Smart Spiral CFL with the appearance, size and fit of a traditional incandescent bulb. Certain fixtures were made with the traditional shape in mind. For example, many small lamps come with clip on shades. A corkscrew–shaped CFL is not the best solution for that type of lamp.

“These fit in more lamps and fixtures than standard GE Spiral CFLs with the plastic base,” says Kathy Sterio, general manager of consumer marketing, GE Appliances & Lighting. “Some people just want an incandescent bulb profile so they can easily use it with clip–on lampshades or smaller table lamps. Other people may see it as more aesthetically pleasing than corkscrew shaped CFLs in lamps or fixtures where the bulb is visible. It provides a more finished or tailored look that appeals to a lot of consumers.”

Covered GE Energy Smart CFL bulbs are now offered in three wattages (with nearly the same light output as the incandescent bulbs they replace) to meet a variety of lighting needs.
  • The 9–watt covered Energy Smart CFL replaces a 40–watt incandescent bulb. It offers an 8,000–hour rated life and 5–year guarantee based on four hours of daily use.

  • The 15–watt covered Energy Smart CFL replaces a 60–watt incandescent bulb. It provides an 8,000–hour rated life and 5–year guarantee based on four hours of daily use.

  • The 20–watt covered Energy Smart CFL bulb replaces a 75–watt incandescent bulb. It delivers an 8,000 hour–rated life with a 5–year guarantee based on four hours of daily use. This covered CFL will have a slightly taller profile that mirrors a standard incandescent 3–way bulb.
The new covered GE Energy Smart CFL bulb, a product of ecomaginationSM available only from GE, expands GE‘s family of energy–saving, long–life CFL bulbs, which includes daylight and dimmable corkscrew–shaped CFLs, 3–way CFLs, and decorative covered CFLs with the GE Spiral CFL on the inside. Each has instant–on technology and delivers the light quality consumers have come to expect from GE.

GE Energy Smart CFLs featuring the GE Spiral CFL inside the glass bulb are available at retailers nationwide. While retailers set their own selling prices, 9–watt and 15–watt covered Energy Smart CFL pricing typically ranges from $5.57 to $6.52; the price for the 20–watt covered Energy Smart CFL typically ranges from $5.99 to $7.29.*
